Story on flogging
It was Christmas time again around the Remington household. Ken, Jonee, Claire, Light, Alan, Noel, and of course Dimitri. Noel had fallen asleep on his side, one arm thrown over Dimitri’s waist and the other stretched out underneath Dimitri’s neck. Distantly he could feel Dimitri exhaling on his slightly curled fingers.
Noel had fallen asleep with his back to the door, as usual. He would never say anything out loud about it, but should anything come through that door in the night it was going to have to get through him first.
Six-twelve on the dot, the bedroom door creaked open. Noel’s eyes opened, his senses instantly reaching out for any signs of threat. Nothing malicious, no zombie sounds or scents… Noel decided to go back to sleep. His grip on Dimitri’s waist tightened and Dimitri murmured in his sleep and rolled over to burry himself in Noel’s chest. The redhead smiled sleepily.
Suddenly, they were attacked! By three boisterous children. “C’mon, c’mon, wake up!” Claire shouted, bouncing up and down on the foot of the bed.
Light was gently shaking Noel’s shoulder, but he was excitedly echoing Claire. Alan, at two years old, climbed onto Noel and Dimitri and was poking them both in the cheeks.
“You got to- you got to get up!” Alan demanded of them, displeased when he didn’t get an immediate reaction.
Noel hummed as he awoke, groaning when one of Alan’s knees connected with his stomach on accident.
“Woah woah woah, where’s the fire?” Noel asked his voice gravely with sleep.
“It’s Christmas!” Light piped up.
“Oh is that what’s going on?” Noel rolled over, finally facing Light. A smile was on his face as he ruffled Light’s already sleep-mussed hair.
“Alright kiddos, we’ll be downstairs in a few minutes. Go get Mom and Pops, okay?” Noel watched the children leave, his door wide open in their wake.
Noel turned his attention to Dimitri, who was half awake already. Noel used the hand not under Dimitri’s neck to use the raven’s chin as leverage to raise his head. He took a moment to admire Dimitri’s peaceful sleeping face before kissing him gently. He could tell the moment Dimitri woke up. He whimpered quietly and shifted so he was closer to Noel.
They got up and put sweatpants on; though Dimitri added one of Noel’s over-sized shirts too. They ambled downstairs to find Claire, Light, and Alan already digging in to their stockings, glee on their faces.
Noel smiled and sat down on the floor in front of the couch, a yawn already on his lips. Dimitri had made his way to the kitchen to make a pot of coffee. Ken emerged from the kitchen just as Dimitri was going in, signaling that Jonee was probably already in there.
Ken sat down on the couch farthest from Noel, a mug of coffee in one hand, the other reaching for his own stocking. Noel had his cradled in his lap, but was distracted by people walking around. Jonee walked in and sat beside Ken with her own cup, and not long after Dimitri walked in with two mugs. He gave one to Noel before taking a seat on the couch directly behind Noel.
Once the stockings had all been gone through, presents began to be opened. Noel received an Ouiji board, lots of candy, and money for Wow, along with a pistol, artwork from Alan, and books from Claire and Light. Jonee gave him clothes, and Ken got him a scope which apparently attached to his crowbar. It was quite possibly the best Christmas he’d ever had. So far, anyway- there were still presents under the tree.
Jonee was blushing and squealing over some jewelry that Ken had gotten her, and kissed Noel and Dimitri on the cheek each at their joint gift- a few bottles of wine with a few suggestions from Noel on where to hide it from Jess. Like behind the refrigerator. Ken gloated over a new tackle box that Seth had sent him.
Alan had several new picture books about trucks and three new Transformers. Light was happily opening the cellophane on a new video game, which Claire was trying to take from him but kept getting distracted by a disco ball that happened to pop open every few moments and spray confetti everywhere.
Alan scrambled to gather his toys, Noel picking up the stray items as Alan ran up the stairs. Noel growled and barked and made like he was going to chase Alan all over hell’s half acre. Alan squealed in childish delight, ducking into his room with a scream of excitement like children emit.
Noel helped him to put the stuff in an out-of-the-way part of his room before helping Light with the remainder of his things. Claire seemed to have things mostly under control.
The twins were no longer little kids, but Noel still treated them as such. To him they would always be his kid siblings. Alan would always be his baby brother. Noel couldn’t see them any other way. To do so would be to stop being their hero. And Noel never wanted to stop doing that.
The day passed mostly lazily, nothing truly eventful happening until six in the evening when Noel decided to use his Ouiji board in the living room. Claire and Light looked on in awe, though they were forbidden from participating by Jonee just in case. Ken had been coerced into participating, and Dimitri was dragged along for the ride. Alan just watched from the safety of his mother’s arms.
Nothing seemed to really happen except for when Ken twitched violently enough to knock his knee on the underside of the coffee table, which sent Noel back peddling as fast as he possibly could until he hit the opposite wall, breathing hard, and a yelp dying in his throat. The room stared at him for a moment before everyone burst into laughter. Alan clapped his hands together, giggling in delight.
Later that night, as Dimitri and Noel collapsed onto the bed with Jes’ two beer bottles on the bedside table and no less than four used condoms in the waste basket across the room, Dimitri murmured in Noel’s ear.
“Best. Christmas. Ever.”
“You can say that again.” Noel gasped back, not minding the way Dimitri snuggled with him on top of the blankets. It would be far too hot to get under them at the present moment, all things considered.
Noel wasn’t sure but he doubted that Dimitri would ever know exactly what those words did to him, especially coming from the raven’s mouth. Oh well. He’d just have to settle for saying it back.
“Merry Christmas, Noel.”
