Story on shrewd
Flashes and crackles lifted into the air from what was once a small town in the Far East Islands. Within the town a boy stood on the streets with blood on his face. Though the blood did not soak his hair, it seemed that it did for his hair was the color of crimson. The boy was only around 7 years old but he didn’t feel sadness for losing his parents or his hometown.
All he felt was indignation. What gave these soldiers the right to come through and raze his town? Nothing did, they were mindless pigs following the orders of a coward who wasn’t man enough to come to the town himself.
The boy picked a bow and arrow off a dead body. He wasn’t too accustomed to it but he had seen it used and was a fast learner. In the distance through the black smoke he saw a soldier holding a young girl’s neck to his sword while taking off her pants.
The boy, though he did not fully understand, decided that this soldier would be the first to die. He held his bow in his left hand and the arrow in his right. He pulled back the arrow but when he let it go it went straight upward and fell in front of him.
The boy picked the arrow up and tried again, this time realizing his mistake and correcting his hold on the bow and the arrow. He aimed as best he could but when he let the arrow go it didn’t quite make it far enough.
The boy now felt silly, he should have known to aim upward a bit so that the arrow could gain some distance. The boy used another arrow on the ground and shot it, this time it barely missed the now startled soldier.
The soldier threw the young girl down and looked around. He noticed the boy a small distance away and sneered. He doubted that the boy would hit him since he had already proven a poor shot so he charged toward him with his sword drawn. The boy sneered as well; the soldier was doing him the favor of closing the distance and making the shot easier. The boy let go of the arrow and it flew right into the soldier’s head.
The boy picked up all the arrows he could see around him and tucked them into his pants, even walking up to collect the one in the soldier’s head and the two that misfired. He put an arrow to his bow string and went looking for more soldiers. He soon found a few drinking.
“Hey cowards.” the boy said. The three soldiers turned around; one turned right into an arrow that lodged itself into his head. The other two drew their swords but one received an arrow in his head before he could charge.
The boy side stepped to avoid the last drunken soldier and then shot him in the head as he tried to stagger back around for another lunge but was far too drunk. The boy pulled the three arrows out of the soldiers and picked up a sword and sheath to put as his side before moving on.
The boy continued through the town shooting arrows into whatever soldiers he found, always shouting at them beforehand so that he did not shoot them in the back or catch them off guard. Finally the boy made it to the outskirts of what had once been his town.
The soldiers keeping watch were started to see a young boy with weapons emerging from the town but when they realized that their eyes were not playing tricks on them they began to laugh.
This laugher was quickly silenced as the boy had not gotten very good at using the bow and arrow and was able to shoot an arrow into each of their heads before they had time to even begin a charge toward him.
The other soldiers turned around startled and began to charge toward the boy after drawing their swords. The boy managed to kill several with arrow shots but there were too many soldiers for him to manage to kill them all before they reached him. The boy looked around and decided to shoot one last shot at a man in heavy armor on horseback. The boy hoped this was the soldier’s commander.
The man had on no Helmet and thus he died quickly from an arrow piercing through his skull into his brain. The boy then unsheathed his sword though he had no idea how to use it. He blocked one soldier’s blow but another soldier managed to cut him.
The boy turned to slice through the man who cut him since his sword wasn’t in a good position to guard the rest of his body but the soldier brought his sword up and parried the boy’s blow. The boy had never seen a parry before and as he stumbled and tried to regain his footing he used the bow to block several attacks by the soldiers.
Now the boy was back on his feet and his bow had been cut into pieces. A soldier ran toward him and tried to strike him but the boy parried him, not perfectly, but well enough to make him stumble.
As the soldier stumbled the boy cut off his head. This enraged the rest of the soldiers who began to run at him. The boy hated the idea of running from such pathetic creatures but the very fact that they were so pathetic left him no choice. They wanted to all gang up on a seven year old.
The boy could not take them all at once so he ran from them. As he ran the boy promised to himself that this would never happen again; no matter how pathetic or how much someone cheated or wasn’t fair to him, he would be strong enough to win without ever having to run from anyone ever again.
As the boy neared the middle of the village he lost sight of the soldiers. Perhaps he outran them. Through his panting he heard a shout “Over here!” and then felt a stinging pain in his right arm, the arm that was carrying his sword. The boy looked around and soon saw the coward that had been hiding and shot him from cover. Before he could run again the boy was surrounded by soldiers on all sides.
At that a few more soldiers kicked him in the mouth, breaking some of his teeth. They were baby teeth though; his adult teeth would come in later. The soldiers decided that selling the boy into slavery would indeed be the best course of action.
When the soldiers lied and said that the town had hired mercenaries the King did not believe them due to the lack of money in that town. The soldiers had to water down their story and say that several villagers set dirty traps and managed to kill a few of them.
The King still wanted to know how they managed to kill their commander who was ordered to stay outside of town. The soldiers stupidly chose to say that their commander rode in gallantly to save them from the traps and some villagers who were actually quite well tried in combat.
At that story the King was outraged. Those soldiers’ incompetence had caused the loss of their commander who was himself too incompetent to follow simple orders. The commander should have known to let the soldiers die if they were worthless enough to allow villagers to kill them.
Having established that the King had all of the soldiers tortured to death and then hung their dead bodies near the barracks as an example of what would happen to incompetent soldiers.
Some began to doubt such a thing even happened and supposed they dreamed it, but they knew that there was no other explanation to their new freedom. Vikont quickly became a legend among slaves and other oppressed people, so much so that the King decreed that anyone speaking his name would be put to death. Even still in silence and with hope many uttered the name of Vikont.
