Story on scepter of power
Candace was a brave and curious girl. She had long curly brown hair and hazel eyes that were greener than brown, but she still had a thin ring of a faded brown around the edges of her irises. When she was a small girl, she threw sand at the boys and they ran away, instead of the other way around.
And if anyone threw sand at her, she’d chase after them screaming insults that made the teachers cover their mouths and gasp.
Once she had found a small pond in the forest one day when she was exploring. She dredged into the miniature swamp, hoping to find a water nymph she could get a wish from.
And the one being dragged into all of her messes, was Samuel Entathios; a thin boy with caramel skin and big brown, scared-looking eyes. He was the opposite of Candace; he was wary and fearful. When she went into the pond and got her dress all muddied up, he was standing next to Candace in her kitchen while her mother yelled at her.
When Candace had gotten detention in school, Samuel was the one who she framed when she got into trouble again, so they could go together.
They’d gotten in trouble together for thirteen years. They met when their mothers met one day at their daycare program, while Candace and little Samuel sat in the corner chewing on plastic dinosaurs and throwing blocks at everyone. Their mothers had thought it would be a nice idea to plan a play date for their children; purely for the children’s sake.
So they plunked the kids down in a playpen in Candace’s mother’s living room, while Candace and Samuel’s mothers gossiped over coffee. They’ve been doing so ever since. Well, the mother’s gossiping over coffee has been doing the same every Sunday since, but Candace and Samuel had graduated to bigger and better things. They sat in their room playing video games and drawing and reading books together instead of sitting in a cage.
Until one day, when Candace was thirteen. Her parents had gotten a divorce. She was sent to live with her mother in Florida, US. Samuel and Candace’s memories were held in the coasts of British Columbia, Canada. They were to be separated by fate.
They commemorated their last day together with a cheesy horror movie marathon and a home-made meal by Samuel’s mother, and afterwards, large helpings of apple crisp.
They base their sad goodbyes at the airport. Candace almost cried. Samuel silently wiped away the tears falling down his soft pre-teen cheeks.
Candace sat on the airplane-dying of boredom-for three hours. She was alone, but she was a strong girl, as you well know, so she wasn’t likely to get any trouble.
“Miss? Would you like a doll?”
Candace startled out of her crappy airplane movie-watching stupor and looked at the old man sitting next to her. Candace eyed him suspiciously.
He was quite strange. He was wearing a tuxedo, as if he were going to a fancy dinner party after he got off of his flight. He wore a little black beret and his eyes were all crinkled. A smile wrinkled his face. His old, shaking, withered hands held out a small doll.
The doll wore a frilly black dress and white apron. She had long, silky black hair and a small porcelain face. She had rosy cheeks and her mouth was painted wide, with little red circles at the edges. Her eyes were black, though.
“Uhm.” said Candace. Despite Candace’s hesitant reaction, the man held out the doll and smiled wider.
“Thank you.” She said quietly as she took the doll in her hands. The man smiled. They both sat in silence. Candace stared out of her window, holding the strange gift in her lap.
“It’s the last of my creations. It was originally intended for my daughter, but I’m afraid she’s passed away already.” the old man suddenly said solemnly. But when Candace looked up at him, he was smiling.
“That’s… I’m sorry.” said Candace sympathetically. The old man shook his head and told her it was all right.
“Time passes. And I’m afraid my own time is almost up as well.”
Candace gaped at him. “Surely you can’t give up so easily!”
The old man chuckled softly. “I’m not giving up. It’s a fact. Everything gets old. Everything will eventually pass.”
Candace glared at him stubbornly. “But still!”
He looked at her with kind brown eyes shining with energy. “And soon, I will be able to join my dear Clarice.”
Candace felt her eyes prickle. She turned away from the old man and stared out of the window. She laid her face in her hands to cover her face from the old man, so he wouldn’t see the tears falling down her cheeks.
Candace hated Florida. “I hate Florida,” she said to herself every day when she woke up. “It’s too sunny. It’s too warm. The sky is too blue.”
Candace dredged through the months, her anticipation slowly growing until the summer time, when she would finally be able to visit her home again.
By April, she was nearly to the point of spontaneous combustion in every moment. She even dreamt of the clouds and wonderful forests.
By May, her teachers had to strap her down in her seat and put on blinders like the horses had to make her focus. And even that didn’t completely erase the thoughts of green and grey in the back of her head.
When the bell rang on the last day of school, she jumped from her seat and flew out of the doors, barely even waving good bye to her new friends.
She was so excited to go back to her gloomy home that her father had made it so that her flight was on the day right after school ended-on Candace’s demands. Her father was used to his daughter’s blatant and stubborn attitude, and knew that if he had scheduled her flight even an hour later, he would never live it down. But he couldn’t help but chuckle softly at her strong determinedness.
After her father had resurrected the large black duffel bag from the basement, Candace began tearing her room apart, packing nearly everything in her room-all of her new drawings, her new clothes, and all of her new books.
After she had finally shoved all of her clothes successfully into the suitcase, she sighed and wiped the sweat from her brow. She plopped down on her carpet and lay there for a moment. When she opened her eyes, a small, pale face grinned back at her with hollow black eyes.
She jumped and quickly sat up. Then, after catching her breath again and shaking her head at her silliness, she looked back under her bed and retrieved the old doll from the dark depths.
She stared fondly at it. It was the doll that the old man on the plane had given to her. She wiped the dust from its face and dress with the sleeve of her black jacket. Its eyes made shivers rack her body; even her soul felt like it was shaking. It began to creep her out after a while. No wonder it was shoved under her bed and forgotten. She quickly shoved it into her suitcase. It was surely a mystery to be pondered with Sam.
