Story on local judge
Once upon a time in a small village in Botswana, there was a little girl named Lesedi who was very naughty.
While out walking one day Lesedi came across Mma Rammala cooking porridge for her breakfast. Mma Rammala had forgotten her bowl and went to fetch it, and seeing the porridge untended Lesedi decided she was hungry and ate it.
When Mma Rammala returned to find her cooking pot empty she cried out in shock.
“Lesedi, what has happened to the porridge I was making for my breakfast?”
“Impi the Vervet Monkey took it,’ Lesedi said, and pointed to the tree where he was sitting. “I tried to stop him, but my legs are not fast enough and I couldn’t reach him in time to stop him eating everything.
“You greedy Monkey!” Mma Rammala scolded. “How dare you eat all my breakfast?”
“But I didn’t do it!” Impi cried.
“I don’t believe you. You are a liar and a thief!” Said Mma Rammala and turned her back on him.
Lesedi felt bad for Vervet Monkey, but she had been very hungry. So she went back to her hut and thought nothing more of it.
Several days later Lesedi came across Rra Modise collecting sticks for his fire. His neighbor called him over to help with something, and seeing the sticks untended Lesedi decided to take them for her own fire and save herself the trouble. Quickly she gathered the sticks and hid them behind a thorn tree.
When Rra Modise returned to find his sticks missing he cried out in anger. “Lesedi, what has happened to the sticks I was collecting for my fire?”
“Mmoloki the Hornbill took it!” Lesedi said, and pointed to the hill where he lived. “I saw him fly down and take the sticks for his nest. I tried to stop him, but my arms are too short and I could not reach him in time.”
“You lazy Hornbill!” Rra Modise shouted. “How dare you take my firewood for your nest?”
“But I didn’t do it!” Mmoloki cried.
“I don’t believe you. You are a liar and a thief!” Said Rra Modise and turned his back on him.
Lesedi felt bad for Hornbill, but she was too tired to collect firewood. So, retrieving the sticks from behind the thorn tree, she went back to her hut and thought nothing more of it.
Several days later she came across her friend Thabo collecting water by the river. Thabo heard his Mother calling him and went to answer, and seeing the pottery vase untended Lesedi realized she was thirsty and decided to drink the water. But the vase was very heavy and as she tried to lift it slipped and smashed into a thousand pieces.
When Thabo returned to find his vase broken he cried out in surprise. “Lesedi, what has happened to the vase I was using to fetch water?”
“Gosego the Baboon took it!” Lesedi said, and pointed to the nearby rock where he was sitting. “I saw him trying to steal your vase, but it was too heavy and he dropped it. I tried to stop him, but my hands are too small and I could not catch the vase in time.”
“You mischievous Baboon!” Thabo exclaimed. “How dare you take my vase and break it!”
“But it wasn’t me!” Gosego cried. “Lesedi is lying!”
“I don’t believe you. You are a liar and a thief!” Said Thabo, and turned his back on him.
Lesedi felt bad for Baboon, but he did like to cause mischief and she hadn’t meant to break the vase. So she went back to her hut and thought nothing more of it.
Several days later Lesedi’s father; the Kgali of their village, went to Modipe Hill to ask the Dragon Kgwanyape for rain. Everyone was very excited and a great feast was prepared, but when the Kgali returned from his journey, the rain still hadn’t come.
“My village, I have failed you! Kgwanyape has denied my pleas for rain, and I am afraid the sky will remain empty until we can figure out what has been done to offend him.”
“If there’s no rain we can’t plant our food and will have nothing to eat.” Cried Mma Rammala.
“If there’s no rain the trees won’t grow and we cannot make our fires.” Cried Rra Modise.
“If there’s no rain the rivers will not flow and we’ll have nothing to drink.” Cried Thabo.
“As Kgali, you are responsible for making the rain. This is your fault!” They cried together, and turned their backs on him.
Feeling sorry for her father, Lesedi decided talk to Kgwanyape for herself. She set out to Modipe Hill, walking for one day and one night until finally she arrived at the cave where he lived.
“Rain Dragon, I am Lesedi, daughter of the Kgali of our village. Please tell me what we have done to offend you, so I can fix it and make my father happy again.”
“I think not. “Said the Dragon Kgwanyape in a voice like thunder. “My friends Baboon and Hornbill and Vervet Monkey have told me about your lies, and it’s only right that you be punished.”
Realizing it was all her fault, Lesedi cried out in horror. “Please, if you bring the rains I promise I will never do a bad thing or tell another lie ever again!”
“Why should I trust you?” Kgwanyape asked. “You are a liar, and a thief.”
“I am.” Lesedi admitted. “But my village is good and doesn’t deserve to suffer because of me. I will keep my promise for their sakes.”
Seeing her tears, Kgwanyape was satisfied that she’d learned her lesson.
The rain came and Lesedi went home and apologized to everyone for what she had done. The villagers scolded her for her foolishness, but quickly forgave her.
Everything in the village went back to normal, and true enough Lesedi kept her promise and never told a lie again.
