Story on Callow
The cafe was filled with the hypnotic guitar of ‘Gimme Shelter’ by The Rolling Stones as Callow was sat at his regular table with a cup of tea and a full English breakfast. Light rain and gray skies were visible through the slightly grubby windows that only just required a clean.
As always Callow had spread himself about his table, his hat hung on the back of an empty chair, his umbrella hooked on the end of the table, his battered coat was laid carefully across the table placed next to him.
Callow had a newspaper opened out to the current events section, as well as two well worn hand-written hand-illustrated books which he was occasionally flicking between the pages of.
‘Oh, a storm is threatening, my very life today, If I don’t get some shelter, Oh yeah I’m gonna fade away.
War, children, it’s just a shot away, It’s just a shot away, war children, it’s just a shot away, just a shot away.’
Callow placed a piece of bacon and egg into his mouth, when Abernathy walks through the door, wearing his customary long black rain coat, trilby and an umbrella in his hand. Behind him was a kid no more than twenty one maybe, wearing a leather jacket and a Gandalf t-shirt.
Callow swallowed his food, let out a huff and flipped both his books shut and put them in a neat stack near him, before he continued to eat. Abernathy smiled at Callow and walked over, “Callow how lovely to see you again.”
“Abernathy. If I had a choice of either having my lower regions dissolved by some clapped out clap ridden hooker, or seeing you again. Well let’s just say, the hooker was busy today apparently. What fresh hell, have you brought to me today? Having trouble pulling a rabbit out of a hat?”
The kid tried to hold back a look of shock and amusement, Abernathy just kept that smug reassured grin he always had. “Charming and witty as always Callow. Would you like another cup of tea to go with your plate of heart attack?”
Abernathy walked over to the counter, and the kid followed him, like he was stapled to his shadow or something. Abernathy came back with two cups of tea and the kid was holding his own.
The pair of them sat down facing Callow. Callow continued to eat his meal while they look at him, “So? What do you want? And who’s the kid? Business or pleasure Abernathy? Did you pay a good price for your toy boy?”
Abernathy’s smile faltered for second but then he regained his composure, “This is Brad, and he’s one of us.”
“Congratulations on your happy new partnership. Now if you don’t mind.” Callow started to drink his tea and continued on with his fry up. “Oh yes and Abernathy there is only type’s two people who get away with calling me Alfred, people I like and people I fuck. You are neither.”
“My apologies and you don’t seem to understand what I am driving at,” Abernathy pinches the bridge of his slightly pointed nose, “We want you to teach him. He need someone experienced and they don’t come more experienced that you. What do you say?”
“I don’t think I have made myself very clear. We want you to teach Brad magic formally because we do not have enough of us to go around at the moment. You are an experienced and well respected sorcerer. A sorcerer that has annoyed a lot of people over the years; and as a personal favor we have kept those enemies at bay. So if you do not teach him, that protection will disappear. So Alfred you will help us for now and we will keep helping you.”
“I, Alfred Sebastian Callow, I shall take on an apprentice, in accordance with the rules that govern our order and vocation. I hereby swear by my name and reputation that I will. Happy now?”
Abernathy smiled widely, “Infinitely, now that is settled, I shall leave you with Brad, so you can get acquainted. Until next time Callow, keep well. Brad, learn well from this man he is a master of our art.”
Abernethy tipped his hat at Callow and Brad and turned to walk away only to turn on his heels, “One more thing Callow, don’t kill Brad or get him killed or else that protection we mentioned will be off as well. Goodbye.”
“Goodbye Abernathy. Good luck with the rabbits.” Callow’s voice dripped in sarcasm. Brad extended his hand towards Callow,
“Thanks for this man, I appreciate it really I do.”
“Oh he speaks. For a brief moment I thought you were a mute.” Callow started to wipe up his egg yolk with his bread, he points at Brad’s t-shirt, “Is that meant to be funny?”
“Gandalf is badass, and yeah it is a bit funny if you know what I can do.”
“I can guess what you can do, and it already makes me laugh with or without the Gandalf t-shirt.”
“Well that’s what your here for I guess Alfred.”
Callow looked at Brad as if he was peering over a pair of spectacles, “Ok that was the last time you call me Alfred, you will call me Callow or Mr. Callow from now on, understand?”
“Sure Callow.” “What’s your name again?” “Brad.”
“Do you have a last name to go with that Bradley?”
“Brad Meriwether, and It’s just Brad.” “I’ll call you what I like actually. I’ll call you Susan if the mood should take me.” “You do that; I’ll beat the shit out of you.”
“You’d hit an old man?”
“If he was being a world class pricks like you, yeah.”
“I’d like to see you try.” “Then you’d see me succeed.” Callow laughed slightly,
“You got some balls. Now all we have to discover is if you can actually use a fucking spell, or you are only good for card tricks at kid’s parties.”
“I’m good trust me on that.” “We’ll see Bradley.” “You go to start teaching me then?”
“Let me eat my fucking dinner first. Impatient little prick aren’t you.”
