Story on Caracole
I set out the day after I graduated. I didn’t know where I was going or what I was going to do, but I was definitely going to see the world and open myself up to new things. I’d always wrapped myself up in school and I’d never really let myself be taken by anything.
I always kept everything but school at an arm’s length away. But I was graduating this year; I had to do something different, something challenging. I had to experience life.
At least that’s what I told myself and my family. Really, I just didn’t feel like staying at home all of break. But that for me was a departure in and of it. I felt like a bird with my wings open and ready for the open road.
It was time for a road trip, just me and the open road. I just hoped that my car wouldn’t die before I had to be backing home to start work. I did need a way to get back home at the end of my road trip after all.
“Don’t you want to go with someone?” my mother asked me. She wasn’t trying to squeeze her way into my trip, but trying to get me to take my baby sister with me so that Emma would be out of her hair. Or maybe as a kind of a chaperone, my mom knew I wouldn’t go too crazy if I had to look out for my baby sister.
“No, mom, this trips about me. It’s all about being me.” She just shook her head and sighed. I didn’t react. I didn’t say anything. I was set in my ways for once.
“You’ll get awful lonely out there on the road by yourself.” I laughed, like I hadn’t always been alone. I’d always been isolated from everyone else. School was it for me. I didn’t have any friends at school really, so why should be being alone in a car be any different?
“Look, mom, you don’t need to worry about me. I’ve got money saved up for this. I’ll be fine. I promise.” She shook her head, frustrated but not defeated. She couldn’t figure out why I was so set on this, when I’d always been so apathetic before. “Look, I’ve never really given myself a chance to let go and just be me. I’m doing that now.”
“You could at least tell me where you’re going.”
“I don’t know.” “Of course you do.”
“No, Mom, I don’t. That’s what this is all about. I’ve always had every little thing plotted and planned for me. I’m sick of it. I’ve always known exactly where I was going and when I’d get there.”
“April.” I hated that tone of voice. She was getting pissed.
“I’ve done it Mom. Everything you asked of me, everything you ever wanted me to do. I did it. I didn’t rebel. I didn’t go crazy. I made it through college without even one time getting drunk. I’ve had enough of it.
I’ve been dying in school. It’s been strangling the life out of me. If I don’t do something now I’ll never get the chance to be free again.” She rolled her eyes. “Dammit Mom, I’m serious. I’ve had enough of this, am here then, do this now.
If I don’t do something on my own then I’ll turn into Mrs. Johnson down the street. You don’t want that for me, do you?” She shook her head, but I could see she still didn’t get it.
She still didn’t care what I said or what I felt. I had a real job ready for me in a few weeks. I had graduated from college. What she said didn’t really matter anymore. “I’m leaving tomorrow morning.”
“You’ll call right?” she said pathetically. She was pulling her last card, the guilt trip.
“Of course, but not every day.” Her lips quivered. “Don’t do this to me, Mom.” I snapped. “Don’t. I’m not leaving forever; I’m just taking a vacation by myself.” And it was about time. I almost wished that I hadn’t told her, that I’d left them a letter and called them later tomorrow afternoon.
Too late now. Besides, I wasn’t that cruel. Just because I didn’t care anymore about what my life was supposed to be didn’t mean that I didn’t care about the way that they felt. She turned away from me.
I felt bad, but I had to do this. I didn’t have a choice. I don’t know what had fascinated me about this trip, but I knew that if I didn’t go I’d be stuck in the same routine day after day after day and I’d never be free.
I woke early. Maybe it was because of the air mattress, I wasn’t used to it, but I’d already packed away all of my stuff and had my furniture in storage. My parents had left the night before, angry with me.
I guess I deserved it, but I also deserved this last chance at freedom. I deserved a chance at freedom before I had to really work to earn a living. I needed it. I dressed quickly and quietly, pulling on a pair of khakis and an old t-shirt.
I didn’t want to bother my roommate. I let out the plug and brushed my teeth in the bathroom while the mattress deflated. I felt so alone when I came back and folded up my mattress.
My apartment’s walls were so naked without my drawings or any posters. My roommate had never put anything on the walls, but I needed that visual stimulation so that I didn’t get washed away in the endless whiteness.
I walked down the stairs and pulled my yogurt out of the fridge. I’d even planned my escape down to the last detail. I hated all this planning. I hated it with a passion, but I just couldn’t stop. That’s why I was just going to drive and keep driving until I had to stop for food or gas.
Just keep driving. No stopping, no turning around and going home. That’s why I wasn’t going south. It’d bring me right by my parent’s house inside of an hour and I couldn’t let myself chicken out that easily.
I couldn’t. This trip was supposed to last me for months. If I stopped at my parent’s house — no. No thinking about that. No thinking about being chained to duty. I focused on eating my yogurt. I started to rinse the spoon in the sink, and decided to just leave it. Little acts of rebellion. They could wash it because I wasn’t going to and I’d never be back here.
I jumped into my piece of junk car, it better survive this trip for me to be able to make it back before my job starts in a few weeks. God it felt good to be leaving this place. I felt guilty for not giving myself free rein during my college years.
I could have partied like so many other people, but I needed that degree and I needed the job that came with it. I pulled on the freeway and headed east.
It didn’t matter where I was going so long as it was away from home. I was running away from home for the first item ever. I think you have to do it at least once in your life.
