Story on carked it
He hesitantly lifted his head from his pillow and groaned. The room seemed to spin slightly and his head felt as if it had been knocked against the stone wall. With a soft moan of displeasure he buried his face back into his pillow.
He didn’t feel good; he didn’t feel good at all. He was glad his mother was out on a mission, he could get out of training. However there was another issue. His adoptive ‘family’, his older sister, and his boyfriend.
The minute they laid eyes on him and saw that he wasn’t feeling good it was either a trip to the nurse or tossed down on a bed and forced to lay there and be tended to; he didn’t like that. He disliked being worried over, “maybe making myself train will sweat this out.”
He reached for his golem that flapped around his head telling him it was time to get up and stumbled his way around his room to get dressed, grabbing Tsuki just before heading out the door. He glanced at the ghost that followed him closely, “don’t you dare go and alert Max. I’m fine.”
Training wasn’t going the way he wanted. His breath felt greatly shortened, his body trembled from the amount of work he was trying to make it do and his knees shook. More than once he had to stop and lean against a tree as a rather rough coughing spell would take over him, leaving his throat sore and his voice hoarse.
He rubbed his neck before leaning roughly against a tree for at least the sixth time that morning as another rough series of coughs shook his frame.
It hurt; it made his whole body tremble worse than what it already was. He panted from exhaustion and obvious malady. He shakily lifted a pale hand to his forehead to confirm what he feared; a fever and from the feel of it, a bad one.
He cursed lightly under his breath while casting his gaze to the little visible sky that was visible through the tree tops.
“Looks like my plan backfired,” he grumbled, “I might be able to make it.” He hurried to the best of his sickly ability to return to his room before Max came around to collect him for their usual morning coffee date.
Normally Max slept in his room but last night was one of the rare occasions where Max chose to pile in with Noah, Ayame, and Steve; how they all fit was beyond him but they managed.
He initially wasn’t worried about Ayame finding out, she was good with secrets unless Noah asked her, then she caved and spilled everything. He shakily slipped off his training clothes.
Shakes rocked his body and his skin felt clammy and damp. He glanced to the small mirror that he kept in his room and frowned. His skin was pale, his cheeks flushed brightly, and his breath came in small pants, “I can’t be that sick. I just can’t be.”
A knock at the door made him jump before lunging for his usual attire that consisted of an undershirt and overly bagging jeans then quickly throwing himself into his closet to change. The knocked sounded again followed by a familiar voice.
“Kurai! You awake yet?” Max questioned, trying to open the locked door, “time for coffee!” The raven haired teen did his best to clear his throat before speaking.
“Yeah, head on down without me; I’ll be there in a bit!” Kurai responded, cringing as he spoke; it hurt to talk.
“Yeah fine. Just going a bit slow this morning.” Max fell silent for a bit on the other side of the door before saying he would head down but if Kurai wasn’t there soon, he would come to retrieve him. The teen sighed in relief, giving in to the cough that he had been holding back before he finished dressing.
The walk to the cafeteria took longer than normal due to shaky knees and the occasional need to stop and cough. He closed his eyes and gently rubbed his temples; he felt as if his fever was getting worse and his constant coughing and lack of caffeine in his system were gifting him with a headache.
His clothes felt far too hot on his body even though it was what he was normally dressed in yet he currently felt as if he was chilled to the bone. He tugged at them slightly, trying to create a small breeze to rid himself of the heat yet not chill his skin any further.
His paused when the large, double doors of the cafeteria stood before him and it was maybe slightly less than half-full. To make matters slightly worse he could see Max sitting at a table that was also occupied by Max’s father, Steve, who looked to be more or less awake. However, Noah and Ayame didn’t appear to be there yet.
He sighed heavily and cringed as he forced back a cough before weaving his way through the somewhat thick crowed to join the Australians at their selected table.
“Kurai!” he was promptly greeted by Max who graced him with a chaste kiss that upset him on the inside; he didn’t want to get Max sick but rejecting the kiss would upset the male and give him away.
He gladly accepted the cup of coffee handed to him, praying that it would soothe his throat and perhaps delay anymore coughing he had; he felt himself cringe when he noticed that Steve had a questioning eye on him.
The older Australian seemed to have a sixth sense for Kurai. He could always tell when he was hiding something, hurt, upset, or just any general change to his usual calm, and contented mood.
If Steve was already picking up on his cold that quickly without him coughing, talking, or sneezing, Kurai doubted he would be allowed on his feet much longer. He did his best to keep his hand steady as he took a drink and sighed in contentment.
It was hot and even though it nearly scalded the back of his throat like it always did, he could feel it burning away at the sick in his throat and creating a nice heat that he enjoyed.
“Did ya sleep in, Kurai?” Steve questioned, tilting his head and Kurai cleared his throat slightly, not trusting his voice at all.
“I went a little over in my morning warm up,” he mumbled, forcing back the cringe and cough that threaded to surface.
“I can tell; you look a little flushed, mate,” Steve responded, lowering his gaze, “seem a little pale too. You didn’t push yourself like your mum does, did ya?”
“Ah, m-maybe just a bit,” Kurai cringed. It was getting harder force back the cough and his voice started to sound strained.
“I believe your father and I ‘ave both gotten onto ‘er about that; don’t be picking’ up ‘er habit,” the red head warned as Kurai nodded, biting his lip; it hurt. Kurai swallowed, trying to calm the cough and stop the tickle that was welling up in his throat, “you’ ear me?”
“Y-ye-” Kurai ducked his head, covering his mouth as the rough cough forced its way out causing Max to nearly choke on his coffee and Steve to quickly rise from the table, grabbing his arm in the process, and nearly jerking him from the table to tug him outside the cafeteria with Max hot on their heels.
The red head crossed his arms, scowling as harshly as possible, waiting with as much patients as he could muster at the moment while Kurai finished his coughing; Max patted him gently at the back hesitantly looking at his fear knowing that the older Australian was fixing to light into the young Japanese.
“I told you we aren’t going to argue the toss! Get going!” Kurai scowled to the best of his pained ability, hoping he could prove his stubbornness and that Steve just might give up like he did every now and then; however this was a rare event and it didn’t look like it would be witnessed.
